Key objectives: cold weather operation; enhanced phosphorus reduction
The plant was designed to process 4,000 m3/day (1 MGPD) Average Day Flow, 10,000 m3/day (2.6 MGPD) Peak Day Flow and the permit stipulated effluent of less than 20 mg/L BOD and TSS, less than 5/10 mg/L N-NH3 in summer/winter respectively, less than 1 mg/L Total Phosphorus and less than 200 MPN/100 mL fecal coliform.
The plant features included headworks, two USBF® bioreactors, alum storage and dosing and a UV disinfection system. Alum solution (49%) was dosed into the anoxic compartment of the bioreactors and phosphorus precipitation and coagulation took place within the bioreactor internal circulation. Filtration was solely by the USBF® filters – the process did not include effluent post-filtration.
The plant was operated in May 2002 by ECOfluid and turned over to the Owner’s operator in mid June 2002. Subject to very rigorous testing in the following seven months, the plant performed well within the design parameters and better.
